A WordPress theme is what defines the appearance and style of your site. In this guide, we will cover ways on how to install a WordPress theme from the WordPress repository and installing from premium WordPress theme providers.

Installing A Free Theme From The WordPress Repository.

You can find a lot of free themes on the WordPress.org (https://wordpress.org/themes/). Here is how to install a free theme from your dashboard.

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Navigate to “Appearance” > “Themes”, this takes you to a screen with the list of the themes you have installed on your site.
  3. Above the grid of installed themes, click on “Add New” button, this takes you to the “Add Themes” Page.
  4. On the “Add Themes” page, you’ll find the featured themes that you can install, you can filter the themes by clicking Feature Filter in the top tab, this shows the different features for you to select. Once you’ve selected and applied the features, you’ll see a list of themes that those features apply to.
  5. When you’ve found your desired theme, click to install, the theme automatically installs on your dashboard.
  6. The “Activate” option will appear once the theme has been downloaded, click this button and now the theme is running on your WordPress website.
  7. Go to the front page of your site to see the new theme style and design.

Installing A Premium WordPress Theme

Summary

In this guide, you have learnt two methods of installing WordPress themes the “easy” way for both free and premium (usually paid) themes.

Some additional notes of interest:

  • WordPress only accepts .zip files for upload via the WordPress dashboard and the content of the .zip file has to be the plugin’s folder
  • Some theme vendors may have multiple .zip files in a single .zip file (for bundle purchases) you may need to unzip the received zip folder first to get your other .zip files.
